Russell Parker’s Kai Kokorako Perma-Poultry

Village poultry keeping is a very important activity in the Solomon Islands.
More than 80% of the 500000 plus population live in rural areas in a subsistence lifestyle. Over 30% of children are malnourished and there is a shortage of all important proteins in most diets.
Wildlife has become depleted through environmental damage and traditional human consumption. Lower numbers of fish are being caught by those fortunate enough to live near the sea.
Improved village poultry keeping is an ideal solution to these problems.
Through use of simple poultry husbandry improvement principles as promoted by Kai Kokorako Perma-Poultry village poultry production can be quickly and easily increased so there is much more meat and eggs to supplement the peoples' meals.
"Kai Kokorako" means Eat Chicken in Pidgin English and "Perma-Poultry" indicates the use of organic permaculture principles in the improvement activities.
This activity can be built easily from locally available materials and is readily sustainable.
